Black Velvet Cake Recipe

 Ingredients:

For the Cake:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

¾ cup unsweetened dark cocoa powder (Dutch-processed preferred)

2 tsp baking powder

1 ½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

3 large eggs

1 cup buttermilk

½ cup vegetable oil

2 tsp vanilla extract

1 cup hot water (or hot coffee for extra depth)

2 tsp black gel food coloring (or enough to achieve desired darkness)

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

8 oz cream cheese, softened

4 cups powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Pinch of salt

Optional: black food coloring or cocoa for a dark frosting

 Instructions:

 Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).

Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans (or line with parchment).

In a large bowl, sift together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt

In another bowl, whisk eggs, buttermilk, oil, vanilla, and black food coloring.

Add wet mixture to the dry and mix until just combined.

Gradually pour in hot water or coffee, whisking until the batter is smooth. (It will be thin—that's perfect!)

Divide batter evenly between pans and bake for 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

Beat butter and cream cheese until creamy and fluffy (2–3 mins).

Gradually add powdered sugar, vanilla, &salt.

If you want the frosting dark, mix in black food coloring or sifted cocoa powder.

 Frost and Decorate:

      Level the cakes if needed.

Frost between the layers and cover the entire cake.

Drip dark chocolate ganache on top then decorate with whipped cream and edible glitters if desired.

Optional:

Decorate with black sprinkles, dark chocolate shavings.

Tips & Variations:

Use black cocoa powder for the darkest color.

Filling idea:

Add a layer of raspberry or cherry compote between cake layers.

Gothic glam:

Drip dark chocolate ganache over the top.

   Slice, Serve and Enjoy
