Black Velvet Cake

Ingredients:

 • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

 • 2 cups granulated sugar

 • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

 • 1 cup buttermilk

 • 3 large eggs

 • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder

 • 2 tablespoons black food coloring

 • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

 • 1 teaspoon baking soda

 • 1 teaspoon white vinegar

 • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Cream Cheese Frosting:

 • 8 oz cream cheese, softened

 • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

 • 4 cups powdered sugar

 • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions:

 . Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans with parchment paper.

 . In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour and cocoa powder. Set aside.

 . In another bowl, combine the buttermilk and black food coloring until well mixed.

 . In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

 . Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.

 . Combine the baking soda and vinegar in a small bowl, then add it to the butter mixture.

 . Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.

 . Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.

 . Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

 . Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and let them cool completely on a wire rack.

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

 . In a mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese and butter until creamy and smooth.

 . Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until well combined.
